What Sustainability Means to Us

People. Planet. Possibility.

For SustainBridge Lab, sustainability is about improving human well-being while protecting the environmental systems on which communities and economies depend.

It includes climate and energy, but also technology, cities, food, water, natural resources, ecosystems, economic development, resilience, education, and social inclusion.

These issues are interconnected. We approach sustainability as a way of understanding the relationships between people, planet, systems, and decisions.

Our Story

Why SustainBridge Lab

Some of the most important questions facing society sit between traditional boundaries.

How should emerging technologies contribute to sustainability?

How can businesses innovate while considering environmental and social impact?

How do climate, energy, resources, cities, and communities influence one another?

How can academic knowledge connect more effectively with real-world experimentation?

SustainBridge Lab was created as a place to explore questions like these. Rooted in Silicon Valley, we bring together academic perspectives, entrepreneurial thinking, industry experience, and global viewpoints to create learning and collaboration opportunities around sustainability.

Our goal is to create an environment where people can ask better questions, examine evidence, exchange perspectives, and develop thoughtful ideas.

Our Approach

Bridging Knowledge with Practice

SustainBridge Lab operates at the intersection of sustainability, research, education, innovation, and real-world practice. We believe ideas become stronger when they are examined from multiple perspectives.

Academic research can deepen understanding. Technology and entrepreneurship can open new possibilities. Industry experience can reveal practical constraints and opportunities. Dialogue across cultures and backgrounds can challenge assumptions.

Bringing these perspectives together is central to how we work.

A Shared Global Framework

The Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a useful global framework for understanding many of the environmental, social, and economic challenges explored through our work.

  • SDG 4 — Quality Education
  • SDG 7 — Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 9 — Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13 — Climate Action
  • SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals

We encourage participants to consider how these areas interact.

SustainBridge Lab is an independent nonprofit organization. References to the SDGs do not imply affiliation with or endorsement by the United Nations.

Looking Ahead

More connections. More possibilities.

Through funding and research collaboration, we support sustainability research as part of our commitment to advancing knowledge and sustainable innovation.

As our work grows, we hope to connect more students, researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, organizations, and communities—and create more opportunities for ideas and knowledge to move across traditional boundaries.

Our long-term ambition is to make sustainability collaboration more interdisciplinary, connected, practical, and accessible.
